Last night, Jacek and I headed over to Sangria 46 located on 46th street between 8&9th.
We recently started exploring this little area of town that is full of restaurants, theaters, and plenty of little pubs, piano bars, and jazz clubs. While it’s fun to find niches that are full of life and character (and not complete tourist traps), so far the restaurants have been hit and miss. Sangria 46 caught Jacek’s eye with it’s tapas menu and a sign for specialty Sangria made with peaches, strawberries, and Champagne.
While the Sangria was delicious, I’m sad to report that the food was not so great. There is a nice outdoor courtyard that would be nice for gathering with friends and drinking Sangria, but I wouldn’t come back here for the tapas. The ingredients just didn’t taste fresh enough for serving and the presentation was only so so. While there, we ordered several items from the menu, which I’ve photographed below for reference.
Peach & Strawberry Sangria – delicious and definitely the best part of our little outing.
House White Sangria (with apples and lemon) – quite tasty.
Jamon – This did not taste fresh to me and I decided not to eat anymore after the first bite. Jacek, who is less sensitive to me when it comes to food quality, wolfed it down. To each is own, but I would not recommend it.
Cheese & Fruit Platter – The rosemary infused manchego was delicious, but I was turned off when I noticed that the pricing sticker was still on the rind of one of the apples! You can actually see it in the photo below, if you look closely.
Crabmeat stuffed mushrooms – Again, just didn’t meet my expectations. The crabmeat stuffing was watery, full (I mean FULL) of undercooked, watery onion, and for the price and quality, I would have expected more than 4.
Sausage & Beans – I took one bite and pushed this little number over to Jacek. I did not appreciate the flavor or presentation.
Bacon wrapped figs – Tasty. Not melt in your mouth wonderful, but probably one of the better options on the menu, in my opinion.
As for the service, our waiter was friendly and our water was refilled often. The prices are high for the quality and all in all, I prob would not go back unless it was for a Sangria party in the courtyard. Sangria 46 has a 3 star rating on Yelp, out of 85 reviews.
