Prior to joining Liz Claiborne Inc., Gunn served as a member of the administration and faculty at Parsons The New School for Design for almost 24 years, where he had a rich and deep history with the institution. Gunn joined the staff in 1983 as Assistant Director of Admissions. In 1985, he was promoted to Associate Director of Admissions and to Director of Admissions in 1986. In 1990, he became Associate Dean.
In August 2000, Gunn was appointed Chair of the Department of Fashion Design at Parsons with the charge of retooling and invigorating the curriculum for the 21st century. Under Gunn’s direction, the department was repositioned as the indisputable leader in fashion design education in America and as one of the industry’s leading programs in the world. Gunn is currently Honorary Chair of Fashion Design at the school.
Gunn has lectured widely on fashion and lifestyle design and Parsons’ profound role in putting America on the global design map. His interviews have appeared in a diverse range of publications, from Newsweek and The New York Times, to Entertainment Weekly and Martha Stewart Living, to Women’s Wear Daily and People.
Gunn covered the red carpet at the Academy Awards®, Emmy® Awards and Golden Globes® in 2006, 2007 and 2008 as a fashion correspondent for The Today Show and Entertainment Tonight. In 2009, he covered the red carpet for the Academy Awards Pre-Show on ABC. He has written articles for Elle, Seventeen, People and US Weekly . He was also named one of People Magazine’s “sexiest men alive” in 2006. In 2009, Gunn guest starred on Lifetime’s hit dramedy, Drop Dead Diva and was seen on the CBS comedy, How I Met Your Mother and in, Sex and the City 2. He will also soon be seen in The Smurfs Movie, a live-action take on the beloved children’s cartoon. Gunn is also a regular contributor on the Dr. Oz Show.
Gunn is well-known as on-air mentor to designers on the reality television program Project Runway. Gunn’s popularity on Project Runway led to his spin-off show, Bravo’s Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style, which is based on his book, Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste & Style, which was published in 2007. Gunn released his second book, Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Instructions to Making It Work, on September 7, 2010.
Additionally, Gunn’s wisdom and wit has been captured in the Atari Project Runway video game, which will put players in the role of an aspiring fashion designer.
