Tonight, I attended the Fashion Takes the Wheel fashion show with Mary Jane Denzer and Mercedes-Benz of White Plains in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. JDRF is the worldwide leader in funding research to cure type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and lasts a lifetime. The fashion show was to raise awareness of Diabetes and opened with a heartfelt video featuring Calla Rusche, a young girl who has Type 1 Diabetes and shared what it’s like having to deal with the disease on such a regular and frequent basis; and a speech by Gary Turko, of Mercedes-Benz of White Plains, who held the audience’s attention with a touching poem about his nephew, who was fatally injured after losing consciousness while driving. His nephew had diabetes and it was his condition that caused the accident.  It was impossible not to tear up during these raw and open moments. Both Mary Jane Denzer and Mercedes-Benz represent the creme de la creme of style and luxury, however as Mary Jane Denzer stated, “luxury often represents a fantasy, let’s help make the dream of finding a care for diabetes a reality”. Well put. More after the jump…

The fashion show was beautfiul and opened with a Mercedes-Benz that drove down the runway escorting the first model to walk – very cool! [Video Below]

The show displayed many of the dresses available at Mary Jane Denzer’s boutique in White Plains and featured the most gorgeous designer dresses including Monique Lhullier, Carlos Miele, Oscar de la Renta, Emilio Pucci, Valentino, Lanvin, Jenny Packham, Pamela Roland, and more! All in all, 29 gorgeous models and designer dresses came down the runway. Mary Jane often has a very sophisticated, yet daring fashion sense that had me drooling with the need to have every dress that came down the runway! My absolute favorite, however, was this Carlos Miele purple print gown.

The cocktail reception had a delicious spread of food including a ‘burger and beer’ table featuring, mini gourmet sliders, grilled onion rings, petite broccoli and cheddar stuffed potatoes, and Sam’s of Gedney Way beer. Another table featured fig and prosciutto tostinis, while another had vegetables with a variety of cheese and olives and another, braised veal with garlic roasted mashed potatoes and micro arugula & shaved Parmesan cheese! Yum! There were even more orderves circling the room including chicken and cheese quesadillas, tomato and mozzarella with pesto on a stick, fig and brie pastry puffs, and more. It was easy to fill up on all the delicious culinary treats! Additionally, there was a wine, beer, and Pellegrino bar.

General Diabetes Facts: Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every organ system. There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which a person’s body still produces insulin but is unable to use it effectively. For more information, visit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
